Tolkien var en engelsk forfatter. Han var egentlig "bare" Professor i Oxford, og så endte det med at han blev berømt på godnathistorier han havde fortalt sine børn. Han er nu kendt hele verdenen over som forfatteren til de to bøger som næsten er fundamentet til hele fantasy genren, "The Hobbit" og "The Lord of the Rings." Tolkien var en universitetsprofessor i Oxford som samledes med sine kolleger til møder, hvor han læste højt fra det han var i gang med at skrive. Blandt andet var Tolkien venner med C.S.
